Instruments, equipment and therapeutics

Introduction

You should familiarise yourself with the following equipment and their uses: -

  • Basic ENT instruments and medical devices used in clinic and on-call
  • Suture materials
  • General surgical equipment (e.g. diathermy)
  • ENT instrument sets (e.g. tonsillectomy)
  • ENT endoscopes (e.g. rigid laryngoscope, bronchoscope and oesophagoscope)

Top Tip: ask the theatre sister for an ENT instruments catalogue and take some pictures of the instruments on your phone. Later on, build a library of flashcards using PowerPoint to learn all of the key instruments and devices.​
